The specialization is designed for students who are working professional communicators (editors, technical writers, website developers, corporate publications managers, grant proposal writers, etc.). We prefer students who are currently working in such a job. Application materials must include samples of actual professional communication by the applicant (i.e., not just hypothetical papers written for assignments in Technical Writing classes).
We don’t admit applicants who have little or no experience in professional communication—for instance, high school English teachers who are just looking for an English degree they can complete online for career advancement and perhaps to prepare them to teach Technical Writing classes.
